this big, grand compromise, the president and and congressional leaders need to negotiate to raise that limit. they're demanding 2 trillion in spending cuts be made to give the president the increase he wants and democrats demanding any deal to cut spending like that has to include an increase in tax revenue. the big question, going into tonight's meeting is whether a smaller deficit reduction deal is possible. both sides are saying it can be done. failure to do it would lead to economic meltdown. >> jon, thank you very much. joining me to discuss the road ahead is the white house chief of staff bill daley. thank you very much for joining us. you've heard what jon said. you've seen what speaker boehner has done last night. what's your reaction to the deal being pulled right now? >> it's very unfortunate the speaker made the comments he has. the president is committed to solving this deficit possible for the future of america. he's looking forward to the meeting to play out his case. he's saying, it is time now to make the tough decisions. in this town, generally they kick the can.

is investigating. >>> another big story is picking up the pieces. two storms pounded parts of the region. the cleanup is barely under way. >> we have a look at the destructions and one of the hardest hit parts of northern virginia. >> early this morning several roads remain blocked and closed throughout arlington county. it is obvious that people here are picking up the pieces left behind by sunday's storm. early this morning officials are saying that several roads will remain closed. old dominion drive and cleve road. people describe this area after the storm as it were some. neighbors we talked to said that they were left cleaning up the big mess that mother nature and left behind. the storm toppled trees on the houses and cars and of downed power lines. it took off sections of other people's roofs. other areas took a big hit from the storm. trees smashed cars parked along streets in capitol hill. in bowie maryland, lightning struck a tree where a mother was. they are ok. if you use the areas on old dominion road or glebe road, officials are requesting you take an alternate route. >>>

increase. >> that's the big deal. you have harry reid coming up with a plan for democrats. that he says includes $2.7 trillion in spending cuts over the next ten years and gives the president the debt ceiling increase that takes him all of the way to 2013. republicans are already saying that those -- his plan includes gimmicks and phantom cuts. so the republicans are coming up with their plan, which would include about $1 trillion in cuts now. it would require the president to come back to congress next year to ask for another debt ceiling increase. >> that's the huge sticking point for the white house. the president has made it clear time and time again that he won't sign a short-term increase. he squashed it at the meeting last night. >> republicans leaders have said that as well. they didn't want any short-term solution to this problem. they changed their tune on this. white house said that speaker boehner needs to stand up and pursue one of the paths that's out there. lot of those same gimmicks in savings from future wars are in the republican budget, the paul ryan budget. george? >
